May 5-6, 2025 - Day 1: Travel to Tokyo

We were up and on the road a little after 5:00am to drive to LAX this morning.  No traffic or delays on the freeway, at the parking structure or with the bus to the terminal.   This morning we were eligible to check in at DeltaOne.  After checking in went through the DeltaOne TSA checkpoint then up to the DeltaOne lounge.   Ate breakfast and relaxed before heading to our gate.  The flight boarded more or less on time and left nearly on time.  We arrived a bit late due to winds.   Cleared immigration and customs and were on our way to Tokyo Disney Resort on the 15:40 bus.  Arrived at the Sheraton Tokyo Bay and checked in.  Then spent some time unpacking and in the Sheraton Club before calling it an early night after a long travel day.

Thoughts & Observations
  • I started my travel day setting off before the sun rose for LAX. Traffic was not bad an we arrived with no problems at the parking lot, found a spot with no issues and boarded a waiting bus.
  • This was my first time flying DeltaOne since the new lounge and checkin opened.  DeltaOne is Delta’s first class/business class for International and transcontinental flights.   The service has its own check in location located on the far end of terminal three on the arrivals level.  It is right before the turn that goes to the Bradley International terminal.   If you arrive by car there are Delta representatives with luggage carts out in that area.   If you walk up there are people by the door to greet you, check your access, then take your bags and walk you in. Once inside someone took our passports and directed us to a small waiting area.  Another person came by with hand towels and offered snacks and beverages.   The area had several chairs and some artwork.  There were a couple counter stations where they took our paperwork to process it, but we did not have to stand there.   After checking us in they returned with the passports and boarding passes and said we could stay there as long as we wished or head upstairs.  We opted to head upstairs.  Down the corridor was a private TSA check point.  The TSA staff was waiting and friendly. They helped to put bags on the belt and we were through in a minute.   On the other side we walked down a short hallway and there was an elevator lobby to wait in with a couch and drinks in a fridge.  Once everyone was ready we took the elevator up to the DeltaOne Lounge.  The arrival experience was smooth and well staffed to keep the process moving and provide individualized attention.  This is definitely a step up from the last time we flew DeltaOne a couple years ago.
  • The DeltaOne Lounge is one of three currently open, the others are in Boston and JFK.  This is separate from the Delta Sky Club.   It is located down the hall on the terminal 3 side from the Sky Club.  Once in the club there were a number of rooms and areas to choose from to sit and relax. These included a bar, tables to work on, individual pods, an outdoor patio, and an assortment of tables and booths.  Once seated a waiter came around and gave you a menu and asked what you would like.  Everything was brought to you, there was no self service here.    You could reserve time in a massage chair or utilize a shower or other services too.   There were a lot of people working and eager to help you out with anything you needed.     I though the lounge was relaxing and it did not feel busy.  I am curious how it is later in the day when there are more flights.
  • The menu was fairly limited.  If you wanted eggs you were in luck as they would cook them anyway you wanted.  But if you wanted something else like French Toast, pancakes, or waffles you were out of luck.  I ordered a side of sourdough toast and it was hard as a rock and terrible.  The side of bacon was good though.   The highlight for me were the fresh croissants.  They kept bringing out tray loads of them fresh from the oven.  The rest of the pastries did not interest me that much.    They were also offering to pack up items in to go bags so you could take them on your flight with you.    I thought the service was great with a large number of friendly people there to help you.  I would have preferred more traditional breakfast choices on the menu though.   Also having a large display with pastries and no signage telling people to ask for the items vs trying to serve themselves led to a lot of awkward interactions.
  • We walked down to the gate early to stretch our legs and move around before sitting for the long flight.   An events person brought out a cart with activities, snacks, decorations and music to celebrate Children’s Day, which is a holiday today in Japan.  This was a great touch and the kids really seemed to enjoy it as well as the staff.
  • The boarding process went smoothly and everyone was onboard and ready to go early.   There was a delay in pushing us back, seemed they were trying to get the A/V system to work. In the end they opted to do the safety spiel live vs video while the system rebooted.
  • Flight time today was a lengthy 11.5 hours.   While in the lounge we got a notice that the flight was delayed.  It was the arrival time, not departure.
  • Looking at the route map we went further north than previous trips, guessing to try and avoid some storms and winds.  Overall it was a smooth flight and the seat belt sign was off almost the entire time.  I was a little annoying that the flight attendants pushed to have the shades lowered.  I understand wanting to let people sleep but I also like to look outside every now and then to see the sights.   Unfortunately after we got north of California there was nothing but clouds every time I looked.  We did get some great views of the Bay Area though.
  • The plane we had still had the previous generation wi-fi options.  Which meant it would be $30 if you bought it.  T-Mobile customers could use their credits for wi-fi, which we did.  I still find it annoying you pay all that money for a DeltaOne seat and they do not include wi-fi.  Yet if you fly most domestic routes everyone gets wi-fi.
  • The meals were typical Delta first class meals, which meant I did not care for anything.  I was hoping I could order/try one of the Shake Shack Hamburgers but that was not an option.   Also there was no steak offering like previous DeltaOne flights had, it was the regular first class short ribs which I do not like.   On the plus side they had a good selection of rolls.
  • The weather in Tokyo was rainy and windy.  We did not see anything until we were just about to land. I believe we were under 1,000 feet and under a minute out when I got my first glimpse of Tokyo Bay through the clouds.
  • Once on the ground we had a long trip from the far side of the airport over to our gate.  At the gate they used two jetways so it was quick to disembark.   At HND you have to hike quite a ways from the gates to immigration.  When we finally arrived the queues were mostly empty and we just kept moving with no delays.   There was a problem with my app.. for some reason it triggered a problem and I had to go to a regular queue vs the quicker automated one.  Seems it thought my passport number did not match, even though it did. The person working seemed as confused as me as they looked at the number several times and everything matched.  They stamped it and I was on my way with no problem and only a slight delay.
  • Priority baggage did not do us any favors as our bags came off toward the end.  We stood there and watched a lot of bags go by before ours finally came out.  It was the one aspect of DeltaOne service that seemed lacking.
  • We had about a half hour wait for a bus to the Tokyo Disney Resort.  We opted to buy our ticket at the counter which had no wait and was a smooth process.  As we waited for the bus we watched the rain and visited with a family who was arriving for their first visit to the Tokyo parks.
  • The bus ride was efficient as usual and no delays.   I was really surprised when we arrived at the Sheraton there was no one there to greet the bus.  We disembarked then headed upstairs to the lobby to check in.  In the past there were staff members there to take luggage and direct you to the checkin location.
  • There was no line and the checkin process went smoothly.  In theory I think we could have skipped this and used the app but we wanted cards and papers explaining what the Sheraton Club level included.  The person checking us in knew a enough English to do the transaction so it went smoothly.
  • We took the elevator up to the 12th floor and found our room.   It took just under 20 hours (19:51) from when I got in the car at home until I opened the hotel room door.   Based on local times I left my house at 5am PST Monday morning and entered my Tokyo Hotel room at 5pm JST Tuesday afternoon.
  • Our room seemed about the same as when we stayed at this hotel in 2018.  We had a great view of Tokyo DisneySea and to the left Tokyo Disneyland.   I really enjoyed sitting on the bed or in a chair at the table looking out to Mt. Prometheus.
  • We stopped by the Sheraton Club a little after 6pm and found it jammed.  There was a line to get in and they were trying to convince people to go to an alternate location. We opted to wait a few minutes for a table in the main lounge.   Found a couple things to snack on but not a lot I liked to eat.  It was too busy to take any pictures really so just relaxed a bit before leaving.
  • Our initial plan was to go to Ikspairi for dinner but everyone was tired and not overly hungry.  Plus going out in the rain did not sound fun either.  So we opted to go back to the room, unpack and call it an early night.  Tomorrow we were heading to DisneySea and the rest sounded best to everyone.
