Walt Disney Treasures - Disneyland - Secrets, Stories & Magic

Wow what a great two disc set. I really enjoy learning about and seeing Disneyland and how it has evolved and this DVD set has some great footage and commentaries. It includes several interviews, commentaries, artwork, time lapse footage, and more plus a three TV programs. This is the evolution of a disc that was promoted a bit for the 50th anniversary of Disneyland and never materialized. I have to say it was definitely worth the wait! The main documentary on the first disc is interesting hearing about the parks formation, construction, and early years from people who were there. I really enjoyed the time lapse footage on the second disc. Watching the park take shape from several different vantage points was great! Also it was amazing to watch and learn about the logistics for what went into creating the live TV broadcast of the parks opening. How they brought cameras and equipment in from around the country and I think they said there were 17 cameras in all and they came from up and down the west coast. How the world has come a long way in 50 plus years.

Ratatoullie

I was extremely disappointed in this DVD. Not because of the film but because of the extras provided on the disc. This is a single disc set and the bonus material is close to zero. There is an interview with Brad Bird and a chef and a couple deleted scenes but nothing else. I really hope they are not pulling a Bugs Life here.. with that film the DVD came out then I think was about 6 months to a year later a 2-disc version came out. That was really annoying. The transfer of the film itself is good as usual. I did find it interesting how before the trailers play it asks if you want English or Spanish..

Meet the Robinsons

I did not catch this film in theaters, mostly because I wanted to watch it in 3D and never quite made it. Overall I thought this DVD was about average. The transfer of the film itself was fine, but the bonus material I thought was really lacking. I do not know what I expected to find but I really was not engaged by any of the bonus material. I did enjoy the film though, which was a pleasant surprise. Even the soundtrack seemed decent (I received a copy of the CD from some promotion and I was not impressed with it, but when watching the film it works).

Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End

The summer blockbuster was released right after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and in time for Christmas... they released a standard single disc, a two disc set, and a Blue Ray set. I purchased the 2 disc set. The first disc in the set contains the movie with a couple bonus items, such as the standard commentary track. I have not watched that yet, I only made it through the film and then the 2nd disc. The 2nd disc contains most of the bonus material. The highlight for me was the piece on the Maelstrom. I really enjoy seeing how the films are made and this piece showed some of the set creation and how they created this amazing scene. There is also a brief piece on the Asian set which is interesting. One of the other main focal pieces is on Hans Zimmer and the score of the film.

Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)

This two disc collectors set includes the film on Disc 1 and bonus features on disc 2. I really enjoyed the bonus features. Unless you have seen a Hollywood production company its hard to believe how large of a footprint they travel with and the first two features on the bonus disc lay this out nicely and throw some amazing facts out. I also found the segment on the attraction updates interesting, a little too short for my tastes, but interesting. I thought the one on the Premiere could have been done better.

Cars

I was really looking forward to this release and a great disc of features. Instead all we got was this single disc edition (both widescreen and regular formats at least). The bonus material was extremely light, but I did enjoy seeing the credits clips full screen, that was a nice touch.

Modern Marvels - Walt Disney World

I saw this show when it was on TV and really enjoyed it. Its a fairly complete look at the parks and one of the better TV programs I have seen in recent years. If you missed the show or replays or just want to have a clean, crisp, commercial free copy then this DVD is worth adding to your collection.

Chicken Little

This film from 2005 found its way onto DVD (which was the first place I saw it). For some reason I did not make it to theaters to see this one (mostly because I kept saying I only wanted to see it in 3D and I never made it to a theater that had it in 3D). The DVD was a run of the mill release.

Cinderella (Disney Special Platinum Edition)

This 2-disc Platinum Edition DVD follows the same format as previous releases in this category, with Disc 1 containing the restored movie and a couple extras and Disc 2 containing an assortment of bonus material. Overall I thought this was a really well done set. The movie looks and sounds great and the bonus material is really interesting to go through with a good variety of things to see and listen to.

I was really suprised that a good portion of the bonus material did not deal directly with the film. It did use Cinerella as reference and the framing but the point and purpose seemed off on a tangent slightly. I was really interested in these extras, but found it sort of weird. For example on Disc 1 there is a piece by ESPN on Cinerella story teams that lasts for over 30 minutes. On Disc 2 there is a piece on the Nine Old Men that lasts for over 20 and one on Mary Blair for 15 minutes. I found these extremely interesting and probably my favorite pieces on the disc, but reflecting on them something seemed weird. They all go with the central theme so it works though.

I was also a bit disappointed in the Trailers/Sneak Peeks. There was a Cars one, but same trailer that has been out for a while, nothing new. Also several sequel DVDs which grind on my nerves. There will be a couple Platinum Edition releases in the coming year (Little Mermaid and Lady & The Tramp). Also there was a princess commercial for Walt Disney World. I was really suprised to see nothing for Disneylands 50th.

Pixar's 15th Anniversary (Toy Story/A Bug's Life/T

To celebrate Pixar's 15th anniversary this collection has their three Disney releases all in one bundle. Also it is supposed to contain a movie ticket to Monster's Inc (Opening in Theaters November 2). This would make a great Christmas present for you early shoppers.... I have not heard of any other major extras or bonus material on these DVDs...yet....

A Bug's Life (Special Edition)

This is a two disk set. The first one contains the movie, and the second all the bonus material. This was the first DVD I bought (well actually it was the original A Bug's Life DVD because the collectors edition did not come out till much latter, then I bought that one). The digital to digital transfer of this film is incredible. The level of detail and clarity is awesome. When people ask to see why a DVD is better than a VHS I show them this films opening sequence. The bonus materials disk contains some really entertaining and informative clips. I really enjoyed how it is put together as a story... well you have guides that take you through the process.

Toy Story & Toy Story 2 - The Ultimate Toy Box

This is a three disk set that includes Toy Story, Toy Story 2, and a bonus materials disk that covers both films. I loved the films and really enjoyed how the Bug's Life DVD set was put together, so I could not wait to buy this set. The movies look spectacular due to the digital to digital conversion. The bonus materials disk contains some really interesting stories too.

Dinosaur - Collector's Edition

This is a two disk set. The first one contains the movie, and the second all the bonus material. I have not bought this film yet. I have heard quite a few stories/rumors about problems with the disks. Plus I thought the movie was not that good, so I am in no hurry to buy it.

Tarzan - Collector's Edition

This is a two disk set. The first one contains the movie, and the second all the bonus material. This was the first Disney Animated feature to have a Collectors DVD edition. I thought the disk was put together nicely, my only complaint is that you have to spend so much time navigating the bonus materials disk. There is no option to just say play and sit back and have it go through the disk for you. It seems like such a waste of time to have to go back to the main menu after every section.

The Fantasia Anthology

This is a three disk set that includes Fantasia, Fantasia 2000, and a third disk that has all the bonus material on it. This third disk contains material on both movies. I enjoy having both Fantasia's on DVD. One of the greatest features is the ability to just skip to the pieces you like and skip over the others, this was so hard to do with VHS versions (I never owned a laserdisc player, so I did not get to experience this). The bonus disk contains quite a bit of content. My only complaint is the navigation and the heavy reliance on menus. I wish you could select a menu and not have to go through so many submenus. This current way the disk is set up is great for referencing things, but terrible if you just want to watch the bonus materials.
