10/31/08 - My thoughts and observations from Fridays trip to the Disneyland Resort (including Pixie Hollow and HSM3)

Hello all,

Looking back at my trip logs I was surprised to see this was the first time I have been to the Disneyland Resort on Halloween Day... overall nothing too spectacular to report. There were quite a few kids dressed up, but it has been that way on several of my past visits too that come on days with the after hours party at DCA. The crowds were about average, with the afternoon being mild and then getting more crowded as the evening went on and DCA closed. I would say it was slightly lighter than the last trip. Most of the E-ticket attractions were between 30-45 minutes most of the time.

Disneyland & DCA Thoughts and Observations:

  • I walked by the Pixie Hollow area during the day a couple of times and each time saw a line that stretched down the walkway. Tinker Bell and her Fairy friends are out only 9am to 5pm. After that the gift shop closes but the area stays open so you can walk through and take pictures on your own, which quite a few people were doing on Friday. Overall I thought this was an impressive character meet and greet location. The work on the fountains and then the path leading up to the Hollow area is well done and the hollow itself is well lit and has quite a few details. The only thing that looked like an after thought was the gift shop at the exit. It just seemed to be placed there and not integrated into the attraction/location at all. I thought it was nice to see the effort was put into the props, sets, etc. and not the gift shop, but it did seem odd. I overheard quite a few guests talking about the area and all seemed happy, the only complaint I heard was about the length of the line, but that really cannot be avoided.

  • I was surprised that the guide maps were not updates to feature Pixie Hollow and High School Musical 3 (or the Blue Sky Cellar) on the cover, guess those will fill the gap from next week after Halloween until Christmas comes on the 21st.

  • As you saw in the pictorial update the gift shop at the exit to Small World has re-opened. Not sure if you noticed, but it was quite empty. I talked to the CM and he said its been really quiet. My guess is this will change once the attraction re-opens.

  • Speaking of small crowds, I stopped by the Blue Sky Cellar a couple of times to check the model and grab a couple pictures and both times there were a fair number of people in side, maybe a couple dozen. It did not feel crowded by any sense of the imagination, but there were people there.

  • Stopped by Toy Story Midway Mania a couple of times and the single rider line was closed, no indication of why from the CMs.. seems to me it does not cost anything to have it open...

  • I caught the High School Musical 3: Senior Year - Right Here! Right Now! show at the Sunshine Plaza and then partially at the Golden State Park. Its pretty much the same concept as the first two shows. The stage rolls out with a group of dancers/singers and they perform a medley of songs from the film and then it rolls on to the second stop, does the same show, then continues on down the parade route and out of the park. They are running it three times daily. The crowd at the Sunshine Plaza was fairly dense at probably ten deep or so and the one out at the Golden State Park was much lighter maybe 3 or 4 deep only. Unlike the HSM2 show they do not have as many opportunities to bring the audience into the show and they do not revisit any of the music from the first two films (that I could tell).

  • I went for a spin on Monsters since there was no line at all and ended up getting stuck. We were about three or four cars from the exit and were stopped for a while then noticed more cars backing up behind us until the attraction was shut down, not sure what happened but they evacuated us within about five minutes. I was disappointed to be stopped so close to the end and had nothing really interesting to look at or walk by as we exited. Later in the evening I noted that Indy and Pirates were both down.

  • Mailbag: Below are some emails that were sent in, in response to this update:
    • Before the Parade of Dreams they are now running a Bolt Pre-parade (this was not listed and I did not hear about it, so next trip I will try to get pictures...if anyone has some to share drop me an email).
    • Rumor is they started draining the bay at DCA today, so if anyone has pictures of that to share again drop me an email
    • I was asked what the blades of grass at Pixie Hollow are made out of.. I did not think to touch them so not sure, has anyone investigated this at all?
