October 2010 Events Calendar

To Celebrate Our FIRST Anniversary in October:
Live Music, Family Fun and a Saturday Night Soiree
Plus HallowScreen! and Finger Painting for Big Kids

 ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY WEEKEND CELEBRATION – October 1-3

Live music, family fun and a visit from Radio Disney are among the festivities that will commemorate the first year of The Walt Disney Family Museum in the Presidio of San Francisco. Throughout the day in our Theater, we’ll screen video highlights that feature the   Disney legends, artists and filmmakers who appeared at the Museum in our first year. At 1:00 and 4:00 pm, Walt Disney’s first feature-length animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is free with paid Museum admission.  

Highlights include:

  • Live Music throughout the weekend. Our first Saturday Night Soiree. HALF-PRICE on Museum Admission tickets and a cash bar from 6pm to 9pm on Saturday night.
  • The “Where’s Walt?” Treasure Hunt Contest – Grand Prize is a Private Screening of a Disney classic for you and up to 50 of your closest friends in our Theater.
  • Learn more about Walt Disney and his legacy with our “LOOK CLOSER” gallery talks.  Museum staff will share details about the visually dramatic “Steamboat Willie” Wall – our special Pinocchio Animator’s desk – and the first underwater movie camera.
  • A 25 minute “Best of” Video in our theater will feature special guests who appeared this past year, including Disney Legends, executives, animators, and stars.  
  • Radio Disney Road Crew on Saturday from 1:00 – 3:00 pm with games, contests, and music for the whole family.
  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs  - A treat for the whole family on our Big Screen at 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm (Free with Museum Admission).
  • Create your own moviola in our Learning Center. New Drop-in Craft activities Friday, Saturday and Sunday 11 am to 4 pm.

 FILM OF THE MONTH – October 4 -29

Treasure Island (1950)

A tangled tale of friendship between a young adventurer and a pirate searching for buried treasure, this swashbuckling live-action film will keep you on the edge of your seat.

October 9 – Behind the Scenes on Treasure Island with Harrison Ellenshaw
3:00pm, Theater

In the late 1940s, Walt Disney approached Peter Ellenshaw to work on the studio’s first live-action feature, Treasure Island. Thus began a professional collaboration and friendship, which lasted over 30 years and 34 films. Learn from Peter’s son Harrison about how his father recreated scenes of long-ago England on painted backgrounds for the film, and what it was like to work with Walt.

HallowScreen! is a compilation of some of Disney’s scary subjects including The Skeleton Dance and other bone-chilling shorts. Costumes welcome, so come dressed in your best! .

There will be a Halloween craft activity going on throughout the day 10am-5pm in our Learning Center so drop on by to create something spooktacular.

CLASSES

October 16, 23 + 30 and November 6 – Finger Painting for Big Kids (Intro to Painting)
1:00pm—4:00pm, Learning Center Art Studio
Discover painting at its most fundamental level: mix colors while exploring the color wheel, experiment with acrylic paints, pastels, water colors, gouache. Adopt the vocabulary of an artist and learn how to care for your artist tools and paints. Registration required.

DISNEY DISCOVERIES: Second Saturday of each month

October 9 – Disney Discoveries!
1:00 pm – 3:00 pm, Learning Center Art Studio
Create your own pirate ship! In honor of the film of the month, Treasure Island, we will use recycled materials to make a decorative treasure.

Imaginations and creativity will soar with our new Disney Discoveries! The second Saturday of each month, join us for family fun and activities in the Learning Center.  The activities planned by our education staff will inspire the hidden artist in young visitors while learning about the life and work of Walt Disney.

Would you like to know more about one of the artifacts in the galleries?  Our Look Closer series will give you that opportunity—staff will reveal little known facts, behind the scenes information, or just additional information during the 5 to 8-minute gallery talk.
