The Walt Disney Family Museum April 2010 Events Calendar Explore the World of Puppetry With No Strings Attached FILM OF THE MONTH Pinocchio (1940) When you wish upon a star, your dreams really do come true. Follow Pinocchio’s magical transformation from a wooden puppet to a real boy. APRIL LECTURES April 17 – The Making of Pinocchio J.B. Kaufman, film historian and author of an upcoming book on Pinocchio, discusses the craftsmanship that went into creating one of Disney’s most beautiful films. Learn how 750 artists collaborated to produce over 2 million drawings and get the inside scoop on what it took to turn Pinocchio into a real boy. April 22 – Earth Day Program There’s more in Nature’s Half Acre than meets the eye! Take a look at all of the insects and flowers that live in our own backyards and find out how Disney captured these scenes using microphotography. After the screening we will have a craft activity. Learn about native Bay Area plants and bugs while creating your own flower or creepy crawly creature using all recycled materials. April 24 – The Art and Practice of Puppetry Janie Geiser, Director of the Cotsen Center of Puppetry and the Arts at California Institute of the Arts, discusses how the puppeteer works to bring a puppet to life. Join us for an intimate look at the creative process and craftsmanship that goes into puppetry performance. Learn about the future of this intricate craft and how it has been incorporated into different mediums. This discussion will be followed by a live demonstration! PUBLIC PROGRAMMING FOR APRIL DISNEY DISCOVERIES: Second Saturday of each month April 10 – Puppet Fun Imaginations and creativity will soar with our new Disney Discoveries! The second Saturday of each month, join us for family fun and activities in the Learning Center. The activities planned by our education staff will inspire the hidden artist in young visitors while learning about the life and work of Walt Disney. The Disney Discoveries! activities are free with paid admission to the Museum. No ticket is needed for members—just show your membership card. LOOK CLOSER: April 23, 24 + 25 –Pinocchio Animators Desk Would you like to know more about one of the artifacts in the galleries? Our Look Closer series will give you that opportunity—staff will reveal little known facts—and behind the scenes information during the 30-minute gallery talk.
