2006 Disneyland Half Marathon Registration Sells Out 10,000 RUNNERS SIGN UP SIX MONTHS IN ADVANCE FOR THE "HAPPIEST RACE ON EARTH" REGISTRATION REMAINS OPEN FOR THE 2006 FAMILY FUN RUN 5K AND KIDS' RACES The 13.1-mile road race through the Disneyland Resort and the City of Anaheim is slated for Sept. 17, 2006 and builds off the successful 13-year history of Walt Disney World Marathon Weekends that are operated by Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. "This is a tremendously exciting milestone for our first Disneyland Half Marathon," said Claire Bilby, senior vice president of sales and distribution marketing for the Disneyland Resort. "Based on our experience at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, we set our goal for registration and reached it very quickly. This is going to be a great event." The magic is expected to spread to Anaheim area hotels and restaurants that are anticipating extra revenue from the thousands of registered runners, their families and friends that are coming from every state in the U.S. and from several countries. The weekend event comes during a time when tourism levels are off from the peak summer months. Hosting similar sporting events is part of a long-term strategy for the City of Anaheim. Besides the Disneyland Half Marathon, other weekend activities include the Disneyland Family Fun Run 5K and Kids’ Races on Saturday, Sept. 16, and Disneyland Health and Fitness Expo, Sept. 15-16. Kaiser Permanente is the presenting sponsor and will provide its medical expertise to the runners and their supporters. Volunteers will also come through a partnership with Anaheim Community Foundation which will receive a portion of the proceeds from the three-day event. Registration remains open for the 2006 Family Fun Run 5K and Kids’ Races at www.disneyworldsports.com. Special Anaheim-area hotel rates and reservations and Disneyland theme park ticket options are available for registered runners, family members, and friends through Disneyland Sports Travel Team by calling 1-877-814-3528 or a travel agent. Guests may also contact Disney Sports Travel by e-mail at wdw.disney.sports.travel@disney.com. Plans are already underway for the 2007 Disneyland Half Marathon, with registration opening online on Sept. 18, 2006. |
