Geek's Thoughts: For those who did not catch it in theaters this movie picks up soon after the first one ends and delves deeper into the characters back stories this time around. The Guardians now are becoming more of a family and struggling with that dynamic as they are thrust into saving the galaxy again. The movie features Vol. 2 of the mix tape and again a great classic soundtrack that is woven into the film.

 

This release has a lot of bonus material. There are the traditional features such as bonus/deleted scenes, gag reel, and an audio commentary by director James Gunn. Plus a nearly 40 minute group of featurettes looking at the making of the film including the music, director, cast and effects. There is also a 70s disco dance party video featuring David Hasselhoff. I thought it was great to find a featurette on the attraction at Disney California Adventure. It is a 5.5 minute piece that shows some of the concept art, talks about the creation process and shows some construction and testing footage. Me being the theme park geek that I am would have liked to have seen this expanded on. They touched on so many interesting things for only a few seconds each that could easily be expanded upon! On the positive side it was great to see the reference/tie in to the parks and it was a well done piece.

The other feature that drew my interest were the Scene Breakdowns. They take several scenes and show some of the layers of what goes into making them. Including storyboards, VFX Animation, Previz, Dallies, and the final product. There is commentary on the overview but the more detailed videos do not have any. I would have liked to have seen it more as a packaged piece with the commentary, etc.. but being able to explore and see the process was interesting to me.

For an initial home video offering the amount and quality of the bonus features in this offering are above average. If you are a Guardians or Marvel fan you will enjoy adding this to your collection. If you want to learn more about the Guardians film and a look behind the camera it is an interesting set of features.
