Dumbo (Live Action)

General Information:

Media Type: Home Video
Type: Bluuray - Open Edition
Release Date: 2019-06-25

Geek's Thoughts: Dumbo is now available on various formats of home video.   This Tim Burton remimagined film explores the notion of family.  Starting with Dumbo and Mrs. Jumbo.  Then extended to the Farrier family dealing with the loss of their mother and return of their father from the war.   As well as the  Medici Brothers' Circus family as they lean on each other to survive.   This version of the film pays homage to the original in several ways through visuals, scenes, and music but carves out its own identity through story and tone.

This initial home video release comes in a variety of formats includes Blu-ray, 4K, Digital  and DVD.   I was sent a Blu-ray package to review that included a DVD and digital version in addition to the blu-ray disc.      The number and length of the bonus features on this release seemed about average with a couple looking at the creation of the film, deleted scenes, a gag reel, easter eggs and a music video.

The bonus features:

  • Circus Spectaculars: An approximately 8 minute feature consisting of interviews with the cast and creative team about the making of the film and some of the training they did in preparation for their circus roles.
  • The Elephant in the Room: An approximately 6 minute showcasing a little about how Dumbo was created in this live-action version.
  • Built to Amaze: An almost 8 minute look at the films production and costume designs.
  • Deleted Scenes: Eight deleted scenes, no introductions or context though.
  • Easter Eggs on Parade: A nearly four minute look at some of the references to the original animated film present in this version.
  • Clowning Around: A couple minute gag reel.
  • Baby Mine: A music video of the new version by Arcade Fire.
  • Digital Exclusive – Dreamland – Anatomy of a scene from final script to final scene

I found the selection of bonus features and topics covered to be about average.  I thought they explored or touched on most of the topics you would expect.  I always find the behind the scenes look at what goes into making these films the most compelling bonus features to watch.  The Circus Spectaculars talking about the training the cast went through and the elephant in the room showing some of what they did to bring the CG Dumbo into the film were both highlights for me.  I also enjoyed the digital exclusive taking a closer look at the Dreamland parade sequence and the scale of it.  I would have liked to have seen them go a bit deeper into Dumbo and how the character was created and modeled but that is the computer geek in me.   I would have also liked to have seen an extended interview with Tim Burton to learn more about his thoughts on the film.  There are some extended clips from interviews in the various featurettes and I found those interesting and wanted to see more.

If you are like me and missed Dumbo in theaters this offering may be worth seeing to experience the film and learn a little about the creation of it.  If you are looking for a new take on a classic Disney animated film or are just curious what they did you may want to check out this home video release.   If you enjoyed the film and want to learn a little more about creation and some of the references in it you will find the bonus feature set interesting.
