Geek's Thoughts: The 1992 Disney Animated Aladdin returns to home video as a Walt Disney Signature Collection Release. The film is available digitally now and on disc September 10th. The last home video release was about four years ago as a multi format Diamond edition. This time around in addition to the Blu-ray, DVD and Digital is a 4K option. There are a handful of new bonus features and like previous Walt Disney Signature Collection releases there is a large assortment of classic bonus material included in the offering.

The new bonus features include a sing along mode as well as an alternate ending in the deleted scenes. There is a couple minute piece featuring Eric Goldberg drawing the Genie and talking about the project. This was an interesting piece but way too short. Another new offering entitled “Let’s Not Be Too Hasty”: The Voices of “Aladdin” is a three minute piece showing some of the original recording sessions. These were great to see but again a relatively short piece. The featured new addition is a 30 minute piece entitled “Aladdin on Aladdin”. Scott Weinger talks with some of his fellow cast, director and family about the film as it nears its 30th anniversary. I really enjoyed this entertaining piece. Scott gives some insight into what he went through and how he and some of those involved view the film now. If you attended the Musical Journey of Aladdin presentation at the 2019 D23 Expo this will feel familiar to you as some of the video shown there is from this and Scott shares some of the same stories.

I thought the release missed an opportunity to reflect on the continued success of the Broadway show and the new live action Aladdin. For a new signature collection release that has already had a lot of the classic bonus material released several times on disc and digitally already I was expecting more new.

If you are looking for a lot of new material to celebrate the Disney animated Aladdin you may be disappointed. What the release lacks in quantity it somewhat makes up for in quality with a couple solid offerings included. I would recommend adding this to your library if you are looking for a 4K version or if you skipped the last release and would like the classic material digitally. A couple of the new bonus features are well done but if you already own the film in several formats you may want to carefully look at what is included this time to make a decision on the value for you and your interests.
