Walt Disney Animation Studios The Archive Series: Design

General Information:

Media Type: Book
Type: Other
Release Date: 2010-10-26

Geek's Thoughts: Design marks the third book in the Walt Disney Animation Studios Archive Series. In 2008 Story was released and 2009 Animation. Design looks at what goes into creating the look/feel of the characters and settings in Disney animated films. This ranges from concept sketches to abstract art. The art comes from the Disney Animation Research Library which houses a collection of more than 60 million pieces. The images are displayed in a large format hard cover book that features page after page of great Disney artwork. The pieces include everything from pencil sketches to water color to digital artwork. The artwork spans from early Mickey Mouse through Tangled, Disneys 2010 release.

I really enjoyed just flipping through the pages and enjoying the varying styles that make up this small portion of the vast Disney archive. In the forward John Lasseter said about 1/5th of the pieces in this book have never been published before. The one complaint I have is I would have liked to have seen more information on some of the pieces. Each piece has a date/film/artist if known. Some more info would have been nice to see or some common thread to tie together the design concept for the book. The text within the book is extremely limited so you can enjoy the artwork, but still something would have been nice to read. To help you out there is an index that lists both the films as well as artists so you can quickly reference pieces that may interest you. I enjoyed just flipping through the book though on a first pass.
