Theme Park Design: Behind The Scenes With An Engineer

Geek's Thoughts: This interesting read by Steve Alcorn discusses many of the disciplines and steps involved in theme park (and more specifically attraction) design and construction. He walks you through various types of attractions, systems, etc.. and then goes into the various roles that must be filled to bring these to reality. Steve was a former Imagineer who joined Disney for the construction of EPCOT. He went on to form his own company and work on a variety of attractions for other parks in addition to Disney projects.

If you are looking for a book that will give you some in depth knowledge of how Disney does things or applied theory to Disney this is not the book for you. If you are looking for a book that gives you an overview and some details on the disciplines involved in theme park design and how they inter-relate and function with some very brief Disney references (and personal stories) thrown in then this may be the book for you.

I really enjoyed reading this book, guess the engineering geek in me came out a bit. He filled in some of the details of what various folks do. All in all I cannot say I learned anything in depth or really new in this piece compared to the sum of all the works I have read but if you are looking for a first book or a concise book that covers what it takes to design and build a theme park/attraction this is a good read.
