Geek's Thoughts: The Cost of the Kingdom by Carl L. Jablonski is a memoir by the chief estimator (show and ride) for EPCOT and Disneyland Paris. In this book Carl shares his recollections of his time at Disney as well as describes what an estimator does. He also shares stories of the path he took and some of the choices he made in his professional and personal life. Over his 40 years in the business Carl’s volume of work exceeded $5 billion for a number of companies and on a wide range of projects, including Walt Disney Imagineering, LucasArts and NBC.

The book is organized into 13 chapters. He choose to jump right into his time at Epcot then into Euro Disney before circling back to hist education and early career. This makes for a number of that’s another story or we will get to that later references.

This is a personal memoir not a history book or reference book on the parks. He does provide background as well as information on what an estimator does for large projects as well as a number of stories of his interactions with the various teams over the years. I would have liked to have seen more example of how he applied his craft. I found his discussion of the Star Tours attraction at Disneyland particularly interesting. Also his view of the Euro Disney/Disneyland Paris project.

The book is just over 200 pages and was a fairly quick read. If you are looking for a lot of Disney information and an extended look behind the curtain this book may not live up to your expectations. If you are interested in learning about a role most of us know little about and one of the thousands of people who worked on these massive projects it is an interesting read.
