Geek's Thoughts: The Junior Encyclopedia is a great childrens book which contains entries on most Disney and Pixar animated characters starting with Mickey Mouse in 1928 all the way up to the gang from Up which was released in 2009. This book is targeted to children at ages 7-11 years old so the information presented in it is accessible to all. Each character receives a page or two that contains a description, pictures, and some additional information. This years encyclopedia is an update to the original 1994 hardcover release that includes the characters created since then as well as the Pixar characters.

Each entry (character) contains a subset of the following information:

  • Character Name/ First Appearance
  • Cool Quote
  • Not so Cool Quote
  • Favorites
  • Fun Facts
  • Tricky Trivia
  • Did you Know?
As I read through this book the one thing that stood out to me as being odd is the reasoning behind which characters receive one page and which receive two pages in the book. For example Mater had a nice two page spread but Mickey one had one page. Some of the groupings made a lot of sense and were great to see such as the Radiator Springs Townsfolk.

The encyclopedia contains an index in the back so you can quickly locate the page of your favorite character. Also there is a sheet of stickers. I found it interesting that they released this update as a softcover book, this makes it much more affordable for all and since its targeted at kids it makes a lot of sense to me.

If anyone buys this book and has one of their children read through it I would really like to hear what you have to say.. I do not know anyone in the target audience so I cannot speak to the reading level or their interest in the book.
