08/18/11 - My thoughts and observations from my quick trip on Thursday to the Disneyland Resort

Hello all,

I was in Anaheim Thursday for the D23 Expo and thanks to a quick checkin process and better than expected traffic I came across four hours of free time in the mid afternoon so we headed to the parks for a quick tour. Overall the crowds seemed to be about what you would expect for summer during the week. Since I was just there on Friday not much had changed, just some construction updates as you saw in the photo update.

Disneyland & DCA Thoughts and Observations:

  • First stop of the day was DCA to try and visit the Fun Wheel, which I lucked out and there was not a long line. As you saw in the pictures Cars Land is moving along and almost on a daily basis more visible progress is being made and details are emerging. I was just there Friday and in that short time even you can notice the difference. For example the trees by Maters or the Wing nut on Flos

  • I did not spend that much time in Disneyland this trip. I relaxed a bit, ate, and walked a circle around the park but nothing really jumped out at me to talk about. The stage that was set up for the Tribute to Betty Taylor & Wally Boag looked great. I spoke with some that attended and they said it was very well done. The parks blog posted something about it too.

  • I finally made it on the monorail to get some pictures of Buena Vista Street work, and having the Golden Gate gone sure made it easier!

  • Spent some time at the Disneyland Hotel, as you saw they have started to work on the Lobby area. So far the impact seems minimal just a longer hike to get to the restaurants. Wonder what they will do when it comes time for the front desk area?

  • On this trip I also played around a bit with the official Disney Parks MobileMagic app for Android. The other day I noticed it was a free download so I did. It has the potential to be a useful application for someone like me. I thought the user interface was a little too heavy, especially for trying to use it on the go in the parks. I would have liked to have seen an option to turn some of the features off. My goal was to use it for wait times and I thought having to wait for the GPS, etc.. made for a slow load every time I clicked on it. I would have liked a non GPS version that came up quicker. The wait times seemed fairly accurate and having the Fastpass information was great. I thought the connection time was a little on the slow side and I think that was because of the heavy overhead and GPS. All in all it was interesting and the price was right, not sure if I would pay what they were initially charging for, I think some of the free ones that have a lot of users submitting times are just as good if not better sometimes.
