EPCOT - Innoventions

Innoventions has undergone several transformations since its opening. Originally this area was called Communicore and it featured a look at the "main computer" of EPCOT, as well as "smart" robots and other telecommunication advances. In the early 90s this early 80s creation was showing its age and closed down to become Innovations. July 1, 1994 marked the opening of this new attraction featuring the latest and createst industry had to offer. Ranging from a giant Sega arcade, to the home of the future by Honeywell, to IBMs most modern machines. By the end of the decade though the displays were not aging well and industry was not keeping pace. Innoventions was slowly remodeled to focus more on a journey through the technology. "Roads" were added to the ground along with signage to help you navigate the road to tomorrow. New technologies like the Segway and home entertainment systems were installed. Disney Interactive took over a large area as well as United Labs. Many other areas were shuttered and some converted into backstage areas.

Geek's Thoughts & Suggestions

We have been extremely disappointed in what Innoventions has morphed into for the most part. Originally when the attraction opened in 1994 it showcased up and coming technologies. A lot of what you saw was not available or has only recently come to market. We were lucky enough to be there on opening day actually and found our first experience to be great (which is saying alot since I really enjoyed the original communicore).Opening day was July 1, 1994. Roy Disney as well as other Disney coporate CMs were there.. For the first several years the place was packed. The exhibats were interesting and current, but like anything if its not kept up, with new technologies it quickly becomes old news. Who wants to pay money to visit displays of technologies you already have at home or that have already become mainstream. That is the challenge of Innoventions to showcase new technologies and so far Disney has had more misses than hits in our book.
