Disneyland Paris Resort Pictures
The text list below contains the captions of all images in the set.
After lunch we took the Metro to Notre-Dame
The West Facade, it took nearly 50 years to build just this face. Construction started in 1200 and the North Tower was completed in 1240 and the South in 1250.
The facade is 41m wide
A video clip of the bells ringing as we stood in front of Notre Dame
The base of the Bell tower is 43m off the ground.
The top of the bell towers is 63m.
At the center of the facade is a large rose (9.6m across). Virgin with Child between two angels
There are 28 statues representing the kings of Judah.
Saint Denis
The famous gargoyles above.
The center portal/door - Portal of the Last Judgement
A look across the street.
Time to head inside.
Hats were not to be worn and silence.. but few photo restrictions.
The nave is the center of the church.
A closer shot of the bronze alter.
There are three levels of Notre Dame.
A taller shot of the main portion.
It is 33M to the roof.
The nave has side chapels on both sides. This is one on the South side (the right as you walk in and head toward the alter).
Candles that can be purchased and lit for remembrance.
A confessional in one of the side areas.
One of the many statues inside the church.
A wider view of this side chapel.
One of the large stain glass windows.
The crowds went in waves it seemed as you circle the church.
Chapel of Saint Anne
Each chapel had a description. In French and English.
Virgin of the Pillar - a statue of the Virgin Mary is in the center of this picture. It is on the South side of the church.
Looking across to the north Rose Window. This one features the old testament. It is 85% original glass still.
A wider shot of the window
More candles that can be purchased and lit.
The south choir screen. It features nine panels showing the appearances of the risen Christ.
Chapel of Saint Denis
You could tour the treasury but that had a fee.
We did not. Instead I wanted to hike up the Bell Tower.
Some chapels were in better shape than others.
There were a series of models and pictures showing the construction and growth of the cathedral
Here are a couple samples.. I know it is unreadable at this resolution.. but an idea of the year and what it looked like then.
A souvenir medallion, 2 euros. Thought it was worth a go since it had the cathedral on one side and the date on it to.
Rounding the corner and heading back toward the entrance/exit on the north side.
The Pieta features a statue of the Virgin Mary
A large pipe organ
The organ sits well above the ground.
Looking toward the Alter from a crossing walkway in the church
Turning around and looking toward the back.
Back to the front.
I mentioned candles several times. There was a donation/cost associated. So this area was five euros. The candle on it was to be used to light the one you selected.
Near the exit was a small merchandise area.
One last look before heading outside. If you were curious we spent about 40 minutes to do the loop inside.
I decided to do the bell tower hike. So I got in line around 2:30pm.
A look across the street. The line moved very slowly.. they allowed about 20 people in every 10 minutes. So use that to judge the line if you visit.
A little dark but the line stretched down the street.
A little after 3pm I entered the gate and started up.
First stop a giftshop and bookstore. It was at a low level, only 14m up. Here is where you purchased your ticket to walk up the 400 steps. It was a small room with a lot of people so I did not take any pictures.. the way up was tight and a hike so no pictures of that either.
Next level Chimera gallery which is 46 meters above the ground. The netting made for some poor pictures here.
Looking down at the plaza.
There were some wider gaps further back so I stuck the camera above to get a shot.
One more.
A cell phone shot.. it was small enough to shoot through the net.
Looking up.
The modern downtown area in the distance.
We were right by the gargoyles at this level.
Thought this was a fun shot of the Eiffel tower.
Looking back what the walkway looks like
Looking the other direction the roof of the nave which features four groups of three apostles.
At this point you could go left and up to the south tower belfry or right and head down.
Showing where we are heading as well as the evacuation plan if needed. You had to wait here since it was a single staircase up and down.
Looking up.
The doorway was built for small people and no bags.. being six feet tall and a big camera bag made it challenging.
The stairs inside the belfry
Made it up to the bell. According to the description this bell is known as Emmanuael and is 13 tons with a 500 kilo clapper.
For an idea on size here is a another tourist in front of it.
Looking up.
Another person got into my picture... posted it for a size reference..
The mechanics of how the bell is rung.
Back down and outside on the top of the tower. The Eiffel Tower in the distance.. a reverse angle of a picture I took this morning from there.
Sacré-Cœur in the distance.
A river cruise on the Seine below.
One last look before heading down.
The stairs down, much like the stairs up.. narrow, spiral stair cases.. this wraps up this section. In the next section we travel to the Louvre.
