We start off the morning nice and early again.. 6:27am was the timestamp on this picture.
I stepped outside to wait for the others and got to see a moose in the trees nearby the building (probably a couple hundred yards away. this is only zoomed in to 135mm)
After the moose had gone up the hill and the others joined me we walked to the main building to find breakfast.

It was nice and peaceful out this morning.
And the view was amazing.. even more clear than last night.
So we opted to go take pictures of the mountain first then find breakfast.

A video clip pan taken just before 7:00am.

A quick look inside the lodge reveals all is quiet here too.
  • Page Number: 6
I failed to get a decent picture showing the room and view.. this is probably the best of the bunch.
  • Page Number: 7
There were others out enjoying the early morning view.

You can just make out the river below in this picture.
The clouds would come and go. Here you can see it getting a little more cloudy already.

We ate at the 20320 Grill.

The view from my seat.. not sure how I got a post between me and the mountain.
The sugar packets were branded Denali.
Another picture out the window as I waited for my food to come.

An attempt from the other side of the table without the pole in the way.
  • Page Number: 15
If you put the camera up to the glass.. it shows how good the view really was.
Time to head back outside. A quick look around the restaurant.

Another look at the main lobby building.
Buses had already started to pick up guests.. we still had a little time.

If I have not mentioned it the mosquitos are quite bad in Alaska.. every bus driver joked they were the state bird!
  • Page Number: 27
Back to our building to pick up the carryons.
A look down the hallway in case you were interested.. very standard.
  • Page Number: 28
Bidding our building good bye and hiking back to the lobby.
One of the many devices to keep the bugs away.

The temps were mild so far.

Onboard the bus now. We left just after 10am.
I managed to get the front seat so I was shooting pictures out the windshield.
    Sometimes with decent success.

Looking back as at the lodge as we headed down the driveway.
  • Page Number: 33
    An airstrip along the way.
    Another hotel/lodge.
    The road ahead..
  • Page Number: 34
One of the many rivers we crossed.
    An eagle overhead.
  • Page Number: 35
81 miles to go, the next lodge was just past the park entrance, this sign we passed at 10:30am
A moose out in a field as we passed by.
  • Page Number: 36
A great picture of the moose standing out there. Thanks to one of the retired geeks who I gave my backup SLR camera and was seated on the drivers side of the bus.

No option to stand outside today, so had to deal with the glare/reflection the entire trip.
A giant igloo (it was intended to be a conference facility according to the bus driver but never used).

We stopped for a brief stretch around 11:20am at Broad Pass.

  • Page Number: 43
A couple of other buses pulled in too. So there was a good crowd here along the road.
Some ventured into the bush a bit. Not sure why.. maybe to feed the mosquito a bit?
  • Page Number: 44
Time to get back on the road again.
  • Page Number: 45
The airport.. basically a strip. It was used by P-51s back in the war if I remember the story correctly.
  • Page Number: 46
The pilots lived in the houses along the lake.
The Cantwell Post Office.. not sure why I took a picture of it.
  • Page Number: 47
A couple of eagles dealing with another bird.
We crossed through a bit of the park.
  • Page Number: 48
The entrance to the park road where the visitor center is and where we would later today travel for over 8 hours..
  • Page Number: 49
Approaching town. A lodge on the hill above (not ours).
The red roofs are our lodge/destination.
  • Page Number: 50
We joked that would be one interesting ride to enter the river! They driver said they drop the boats that way then you board down below and downstream a bit.
Tomorrow we will travel the 117 miles to Fairbanks.
  • Page Number: 51
Across the street from the lodge is a small strip mall. We did not have time to visit it.
  • Page Number: 52
Pulling into our lodge.. it was about 12:20pm a couple hours till our Tundra Wilderness tour.
    Inside the lobby.
  • Page Number: 53
This lodge was much more crowded than the last. The lobby area felt like a bus terminal with the constant flow of guests and buses outside.
The grounds were more compact and developed but still nice.

We had an unbelievable room here. It was a corner room and had two queen beds, bunk beds, and a pull out couch..
  • Page Number: 58
Friends had a room next door and with their luggage there was barely any room to walk around. We did not have that problem.. too bad we would not really be able to enjoy it. We were here one night and would spend most of the day on tour and then an early departure tomorrow.

Next stop lunch. Had to fuel up for the long tour ahead.
  • Page Number: 61
Wonder if Gaston did some of there decorating..
  • Page Number: 62
The main building overlooked the river and beyond that Denali National Park.
On the far side looks to be the rail line. I never saw a train go by but I was not looking more than 20 minutes total over the two days.

Back in the lobby to prepare to leave for the tour.
  • Page Number: 69
It was just after 2pm and our tour was scheduled for 2:30pm. That will be part two of the pictures.
